What to do and see here?
Plenty, if you know where to look.
Especially once you move away from the coast, you’ll notice that this part of Spain is, although very welcoming to tourists, not fully dedicated to or exploited for the purpose of entertaining guests. Especially in the smaller villages (El Calón, Villarícos, El Pozo del Esparto, Garrucha, etc.) one basically lives among Spaniards who either live and work there or own a second home at the coast. All are more than happy to share the history, climate and landscape they are blessed with.
Do not expect your visit to be some sort of a guided tour with signs and gates and pointers everywhere you go; you’ll have to go out and explore by yourself. Actually, it is part of the charm of the region.
It is not our intention to provide you with a full-blown travel guide. You’ve most likely prepared for your trip long before you arrived and know where you plan to go and what to do. If not, there’s the internet with tons of information on any subject you might be particularly interested in.
Having said that, we would like to provide you with some basic information regarding the highlights that we personally found interesting to see or know within a perimeter of +/- 30 kilometres from Villaricos.
