Beaches, beaches, beaches

The east facing side of the Almería province has a remarkably pristine and well protected, very rugged coastline with secluded bays and remote beaches, some linked only by a footpath. Much of the area is comprised of volcanic rocky mountains that plunge directly to the shore. Impressive and fascinating.

Well protected as the coast may be, where can you still drive your car up to the very waterline? It’s probably not something you’d do but it gives a wonderful sense of freedom just the same.

Some of the beaches along the coast are not easily accessible, requiring some climbing down steep slopes on narrow paths. All the more rewarding when you arrive at your ‘private’ beach though!

We’ll not spoil your eagerness to go out and explore by yourself and keep it short. Only essential information regarding some of the beaches from San Juan de los Terreros down to Villarícos (along the magnificent and famous coastal road AL-7107) will be mentioned in the tables on this page (refer to the link).

Nearby dog-friendly beach

Dogs are not allowed on beaches. However, in the summer of 2022 a dog-friendly beach will be open to the public - and their dogs: Playa Fábrica del Duro. It's only a 5 - 6 minutes walk from Todo Fantástico, as shown in this map.

All that said, we’d like to draw your attention to four outstanding beaches, category ‘must see’. They’re all located in the province of Murcia, halfway between San Juan de los Terreros and Águilas. This region is called the Costa Cálida.

Playa Calarreona

With its 450 metre length and 45 metre average width it is the longest and widest beach of the region, with a significant expanse of fine-grained sand that even formed small dunes on the adjoining salt marshes. Expect it to be quite busy though.

Playa Carolina

Semi-urban beach. One of the most characteristic beaches, easily accessible from the Carretera de Almería road. It faces east and has a beautiful view of the village and of the promontory where the castle of San Juan de Las Águilas is located. Abundant fine sand, a quiet and progressive road to the

beach. Protected in the south and east. It is part of the site known as ‘Cuatro Calas’ and is referred to as ‘Protected Natural Landscape’.

La Higuerica

This beach is located in a natural setting, five kilometres within the famous Cuatro Calas (Four Coves). Like the other coves, this beach has a significant area covered by golden sand that gently leads into crystal-clear waters. Facing east, it is sheltered from the west wind and slightly less protected from the southwest wind. There is a sharp-edged, small rocky island, which fishers call ‘La Cama de los Novios’ (The Bride and the Groom's Bed), located opposite this beach.

Length: 200 metres, average width: 47 metres, with fine grey sand.

Los Cocedores

Beach with fine golden sand located in the natural environment between Águilas (Murcia) and Andalusia. The view is surrounded by two reefs, one of them is black due to the presence of volcanic rocks and the other one is yellow and has fossil remains, offering a unique environment for geology lovers. It is 5.6 kilometres outside the city, open to the south, and protected against eastern winds by Punta Parda.

As you can tell from the photos below, this is a near-to magical, very impressive site. Especially in the quiet, early morning hours it offers a spectacular sight. A visit is highly recommended.
